So now I’m 'one of those' – a blogger. The idea of blogging kind of annoys me, but I really love food. Like, really bloody love it. And therefore thought I could write about it... (I'll probably be wrong).
The best thing about food, for me, is trying new types. I really enjoy cooking, and trying new recipes, but the best way of doing this is eating out (which my waistline and bank balance will tell you is happening far too often for a poor graduate...). I also enjoy when I can exert as little energy as possible
for the greatest gastronomic reward. As myself and a friend, C,
have noted on multiple occasions, I’m a ‘fat pig’ when it comes to food (and he
when it comes to drink, incidentally).
So the purpose of this blog is kind of two-fold - the first, is to do a little bit of reviewing for restaurants I've tried, and hopefully make some pretty decent recommendations. A friend of mine, P - having forced me to hand over a couple of reviews I did last year - recently told me that the success of my writing was not sounding like a pretentious wanker... and that as a result I was doing quite ok. So that's something...
Secondly, I want to document (and probably entertain with inevitable failure) my attempts at experimenting in my own kitchen. Despite people generally enjoying what I do, I think it's all been a bit crappy/basic so far, so - armed with my new pasta machine and frozen yoghurt maker - I'm attempting to broaden my culinary horizons to more than what I know from Masterchef and the Great British Bake Off...

I also like travelling. I’ve not done tons, but enough to
know I like it. I have the benefit of being a recent graduate, meaning I
have no idea what I’m going to do in my life. So I put two and two together,
and decided that it would be great to postpone responsibility/life by
travelling. So the plan is move home, get a shitty job and save as much money
as possible to ‘see’ South East Asia. [As
an aside, I hate it when people use ‘see’ in that context; but here I am...].
Additionally I need a new ‘thing’. You know, everyone has at least
one ‘thing’ – running maybe, sport etc. I recently realised my ‘thing’
(amongst others) was being a student, and since that’s pretty much over, I need
to fill the void. Having written a few reviews – and taking a law degree that was harrowingly dull at best –
why not try something which you actually like… Hence, I'm going to see parts of the world I'll probably never get to see again, learn as much as I can about their food culture, history and attitudes. And try to document it here - alongside other food-related experiences - giving the whole enthusiasm thing a go.
So here it goes. I’m going to try really hard not to sound
like a wanker (probably not a great start), but it’s pretty tricky if you’re
attempting to blog about ‘food’ and ‘travelling’ together (essentially the two
most pompous activities pursuable). Nonetheless, enjoy.
